A Conversation With My Daughter

by Marinka on April 3, 2010

Scene: My in-laws’ house in North Carolina.

My 11 year old daughter is taking a break from the stress of playing MiniClip on the computer, and relaxing with some television.

Marinka: Have you done any reading at all this vacation?

TV watching daughter: What?

Marinka: Have you read your book at all this vacation?

TV watching daughter: What? No.

Marinka: If you don’t read, you will become a moron and not get into a good college.

TV watching daughter: When I’m on vacation, I don’t want to curl up with a book. I want to explore and learn new things.

Marinka: You’re watching Handy Manny.

TV watching daughter:
Que?

Ha! Yeah, that didn’t make any sense to me, either!

What? Everyone knows that Handy Manny is the gateway to an Ivy League education. LOL.

Training for a career in international relations, that child is clearly genius.

What about “young miss” and the “butterfly group”?????

Is Landrinka reading anything ever?

Handy Manny is the gateway cartoon for more intellectually challenging shows like Dora the Explorer and Go, Diego, Go. You shouldn’t stunt her intellectual curiousity by making her stop now.

Sorry to tell you this, but even my 2-yr old has no patience for handy Manny. On the brighter side, my brother read nothing until he was 17, and he still became an engineer.

I think Handy Manny might be preferrable to the reruns of Family Matters that my kids like to watch in the morning.

Please make it stop.
