A Rose by Any Other Name is Still Overpriced

by Marinka on August 28, 2013

I changed my blog name this week and no one got me a gift or anything. I blame Miley Cyrus.

It’s now Marinka NYC instead of Motherhood in NYC. I’ve been thinking about it for a while. For one, as my kids get older, they don’t love my blogging about them. And for another, I’m such an egomaniac, why shouldn’t I get more play in the header? And for a third, I’m hoping this will reduce the number of “Dear Mommyblogger” PR pitches that I receive. I mean, I know these people have a job to do, but unless they’re offering an evening with Ryan Gosling, I’m not interested.

What I am interested in knowing is why people sign their emails. I’m not Sherlock Holmes or anything but generally when I receive an email I can figure out who it’s from. There are clues, you know. Like the email address. Or the fact that the person is a friend. Or a “friend”. And then, while I was wondering this, I got an email from someone who reads this blog and she asked me a question and after I responded, I signed it with my name.

I forgave myself because it was my first exchange with this particular person, but slippery slope, right?

A new name! That’s awesome, and I like it! When I named my blog Loulou’s Views in 2007, I had know idea I’d be blogging more than a day… and fight really put much thought in the name. I don’t hate it, but… Maybe Loulou would have been just as good? Oh my. Enough talking about me. Yay, and congrats, on your new blog name. Love you!

It’s going to be hard for me to make this monumental change in my head. From now on, you’ll be The Artist Formerly Known as Motherhood in NYC.

As long as you don’t sign off with “Best” or “Be well” I’m ok.

I’m pretty sure there is etiquette that says you should get a shower or something for a new blog name.

I think we should stick with the tradition of signing an email. I have a friend who has a ridiculous email name and I didn’t know who he was for a really long time. He was trying to get me to meet him while he was in town and I was contacting everyone to find out who the heck this guy was. Turns out I would have liked to see him while he was in town but I avoided it because I didn’t want any nasty surprises. What if it had been an old boyfriend and he would have seen me now when I’m clearly older than 21?

Heaven forbid.

If it makes you feel more grown up, or identified in the way correct to you, it’s just fine. And your readers will follow. I prefer not having my name on my blog, it’s too anonymous. There are many people with my same name. There’s the high school art teacher, the pr person for wine in California. So what’s in a name? A confusing population. Again, it’s personal, so hopefully you won’t be getting followers of other Marinka, and if so, make new friends?

It’s like a secret “I’m Right, You’re Wrong,” isn’t it? I always sign emails because it drives me crazy when my students email me without signing theirs. Invariably, they have emailed from an account like ladybug12345@yahoo.com, and given me no identifying information about WHICH of my classes they are taking, and then they expect me to answer a question about “the assignment.” Drives. Me. Bonkers.

I also always sign the first email of an exchange with anyone. I write a greeting too at the top of the email. I can’t stop pretending that these are letters, I guess. But after the first email of the exchange, I will leave off the signature if I’m writing something personal, casual, familiar. I always sign a professional email, though. Even #4 in the email chain, if I’m corresponding with someone I don’t know well. Is this wrong?

Oh, and I like your new blog name.

But you’d better sign emails for a while, so none of us get confused about who you are, now that you’ve jettisoned your motherhood tiara.

So if I send someone a greeting card, there’s really no need to sign my name to it because it’s already on the envelope? Does this mean I also don’t have to sign my checks because they have my name on them as well?

Not signing your name on checks is a really good way to save money.

As for greeting cards, I’ll have to ask my grandmother.

So funny that you brought this up. I have an especially cranky friend who asked this same question on an email chain just yesterday. Everybody doesn’t know everyone’s email now, especially with fb communication so rampant and she couldn’t tell who was asking what.

Love the new name. It’ll look great in an email!

Smoothest blog upgrade ever.

Never even noticed.

You are smooth as silk sophisticated.

Also: I sign my emails because I forget who’s sending them. xo

I have never had the name mom in my blog name and I still get PR pitches sent to Dear Mommy Blogger. Today I got one about pregnancy advice I need.

So, this was a giant waste of time, I guess is what I’m saying.

(I am awesome at comments.)

Love the new name, or should I say re-branding.

I didn’t even notice the name change. I guess because I usually read you on my phone. And because I know you would never make such a big move without consulting me first.

I like the change! My blog name has been . . . Nina Badzin’s Blog from week 3 of blogging. For one week it was “The Mom in Middle.” Then I didn’t write about motherhood for two weeks so I changed it. In other words, I’ve been an egomaniac from early on! 😉
