Anything Is Possible

by Marinka on January 5, 2011

Young Ladrinka told me a joke yesterday that made me laugh and laugh, even though it contained the word “fart” or maybe because of it.

The premise of the joke is that the Big Chief decides that he wants to fart, but he doesn’t know how, because he’d never farted before, so he sends a messenger to the Medicine Man and the Medicine Man gives the messenger a pill for the Big Chief to take once a day and a week later the messenger returns and says “Big Chief, no fart.” And the Medicine Man increases the dosage to two pills a day, and again, the messenger returns and says “Big Chief, no fart.” This goes on until the Medicine Man prescribes 20 pills a day, and a week later, the messenger comes back and says “Big Fart, No Chief.”

You really must see Young Ladrinka tell this joke and you’ll be happy to hear that I did record him last night, so just as soon as my tech support (i.e. my beautiful daughter) deigns to upload, or download or sideways load, you can enjoy it too.

But this morning, I told Young Ladrinka that it didn’t make sense that the Big Chief didn’t know how to fart. And he said, not quite awake yet, “in jokes, anything is possible.”

And it’s true. We suspend disbelief to laugh, we hang on to things that we know are improbable because they make us happy and I know that I will never, ever underestimate the power of a good joke.

Especially when told by one of my children.

And finally, check out my friend Lisa’s blog. I’m a huge fan and her conversations with her son make me laugh and laugh.

And we all need to laugh.

I love this. This is why I keep coming back to read. Well that and you pay me.

My smart, sophisticated husband has exactly that sense of humor. I was raised in a home where, even if you blew the house down (due to a gaseous emission, as my parents would have described it), it would have been totally ignored. When the children were young, they thought that he had the best sense of humor ever.

We say “Big fart, no shit.” It means all talk, no action.

I’m willing to chip in on the video. What does your daughter charge?

I hate humanity, children, and especially fart jokes. But this video makes me smile. I bet in 10 years when you are re-watching it, it’s going to make you smile even more.

Giggled when I imagined Ladrinka telling you– but the video: totally adorable. Smiling over here.

Totally told Lia the joke this evening, after making her promise not to tell Gia (we have enough potty mouthing in this house). Thinking I did just a good a job as Ladrinka I was very proud of myself. She looked at me and said, I don’t get it, do you have another joke? I, of course, retold and then explained this one. Hmmmm. Might tell my husband later (he will definitely get it!)

Oh my god I remember that joke from my childhood! But I didn’t remember the punchline so it was like hearing it for the first time. And yes – it was just as funny. Thanks for the laugh.

Clearly, this child received his impressive “making people laugh” skills from his equally talented mother. Most awesome.

This is awesome. I’m going to steal it. I have a job interview tomorrow and I’ve been looking for a good ice-breaker. Pretty sure this is it. “Big fart, no chief” — who WOULDN’T hire me after that??!? Classic.

Oh, did not expect the mirror held up to my face here today.

I am just like that, cannot leave well enough alone.

That would’ve been me, “stand higher, so they can see your hands, talk louder, 20 pills….”

Oh, the micromanagement of me.

Thanks for the lesson here, today, MotherhoodinNYC.

You offer the world so much more than just humor. It’s “Is this you” day here today, for me.

I wouldn’t be allowed on set if I were a stage mother.

Just let the boy deliver his punch line. That will be my mantra.
