Awkward

by Marinka on August 11, 2013

trafficIt’s a little awkward, when you drive to Maryland to pick up your kid from baseball camp, and then as you’re standing around with the other parents waiting for the game to end, and casually mention that you’re one of the most devoted parents in the history of parenthood because you made this trip all the way from NYC, which is like two and a half hours away, and that’s in ideal traffic conditions, and when was the last time that has ever happened, ha ha, and the dad standing next to you says, “oh, that’s not so bad!” and so you’re forced to ask from whence he hails and it turns out that they flew in from Chicago and then some other parents say that they came from Montana and Venezuela, respectively, just to spite you, apparently, so you slink back and vow to send your kid to baseball camp on Mars next year so that you’ll definitely get that most devoted parent award.

And then your husband points out that you weren’t even the one driving, and all you did was sit there and complain about having to change the radio station all the time because you only have two hands and one of them is twirling your hair, and the other one is holding your iPhone, and you see no reason why we have to lose the NYC stations just because we’re in Delaware.

The things you put up with. If you weren’t such a devoted parent, you’d never get out of bed.

I won’t even put my kids in Greek school on Saturday mornings because it’s a 20 minute drive to the WEST END.

I’m a ten minute walk from the kids school, yet I drive and wait in the school pickup loop for at least 20 minutes. Talk about lazy!

But I am the most devoted parent having rusticated myself in a beach town for my som’s internship then driven him to the world puppeteering convention in “better dead than in Philadelphia.” I feel your pain.

I don’t get when people get on a plane to go to camp.

But… you had to leave New York! Didn’t they understand how much of a subhuman effort this was.

You’re clearly the most devoted. You had to endure changing radio stations which is the most annoying thing. The rest of them probably flew in and got to watch a movie while someone served them beverages and snacks! You had to get yours from a gas station!

In my day, my mom was so devoted that she sent us outside with sticks and rocks. THAT was our camp.
