Conversation

by Marinka on November 4, 2011

This is the conversation that I had with Young Ladrinka, age 10, as we were out Trick-or-Treating.

His grandfather played for the Yankees in the Minor Leagues, so for Halloween, Young Ladrinka dressed as his grandpa, in a Yankees uniform. Even though he hates the Yankees. It was, as I believe it is commonly known, The Ultimate Sacrifice.

I, as you know, was dressed in a flattering Po costume. There are definite Pros and Cons to the Po costume. The most dramatic Pro being that it is very forgiving and makes you feel Instantly Skinny. The biggest Con is that I thought that I was in a sweat lodge.

So as we walked the streets of the West Village, running up brownstone steps after brownstone steps to get our candy, this is what transpired between us:

YL: I don’t want to trick or treat with you anymore, it’s too distracting.

Marinka: Too distracting? What do you mean? Hello, children and other fans! I am PO!

YL: Everyone stops and tells you how “great” you look and wants a picture.

Marinka: That’s because my costume is awesome and spectacular. And go easy with those air quotes. Yes! I am the real Po!

YL: It’s slowing us down. We’ve been out for an hour and I only have a few inches of candy.

Marinka: That’s not my fault. People want to stop and admire me and take my picture. Another shot with the whole family, perhaps? Don’t mind if I do!

YL: That’s a waste of time.

Marinka: Don’t be bitter just because you have a costume that you have to explain. Ee-oh! Eee-OOOH, little children! What? Yes, Tinky Winky is fine! I’ll be sure to pass on your regards!

YL: Can we hire someone to trick or treat for us next year? This is a lot of work.

Marinka: You mean we’ll sit at home and someone will collect candy and bring it to us?

YL: Yes, let’s do that.

Marinka: Why don’t we just go to the store and get a bag of candy and eat it?

YL: Yes!

Marinka: No. Hold on, of course you can have a photo! Would you like my autograph– fine, fine, I can’t sign with these paws anyway.

YL: This is so annoying.

Marinka: Not for me! And my fans!

Although come to think of it, maybe he’s right. All the stopping for photos and chit chat really did cut into my candy grubbing time.

He is so efficient.

We used to have a little guy like that across the street, moved now, but I remember he spent the day before sketching out a map and the quickest routes to the houses that always gave out FULL size bars.

Love that at birth personality that comes out.

And PO?…who wouldn’t want a picture…have to be kuhrazy to pass that up.

I think you should keep Po around. Lovely for Mother-of-the-Groom.

How much do you think YL would be willing to pay for a trick-or-treater? I’m always looking for part-time gigs.

What I would have done to see you in a PO costume. Besides snap your picture, ignore your son and steal both of your candy, obviously.

That is so cute that he decided to dress as his grandpa! What a great grandson. Maybe that is why he was so jealous of your attention, he wanted more appreciation for his costume!

Yeah, that’s probably not it.
