Do Good While Eating Well

by Marinka on May 12, 2011

If you’re like me, you are always thinking of ways that you can do more to help others, but are upset that fundraisers often come with horrific rubber chicken entrees. It’s as though there were some kind of law that if you’re doing a good deed, you must suffer gastronomically.

Well, no more! Because on Saturday, June 4th, from 11:30 to 3 pm, West Village’s fancy-shmancy Gansevoort Street (with COBBLESTONES!) will be home to one-of-a-kind-culinary festival Tastes, a fundraiser for a local Chelsea public school, Lab.

Because although Lab is a great school, it needs to supplement its budget. Or in layperson’s terms: Lab needs cash.

(Disclaimer: My children do not attend Lab, but they have friends who do, and I would absolutely love it if they went to high school there. Because then I could say “What? You want to know where my children are? Oh, they’re at The Lab.” And make a Frankenstein face to imply that they are busy experimenting. And no, you are not allowed to ask how I would make the Frankenstein face. And yes, I could say The Lab instead of Lab because The I am from the former Soviet Union and the we don’t the know about articles.)

Anyway.

Some twenty restaurants, including my favorites Cookshop and Red Cat, Buddakan, Pastis and Spice Market will have offerings from their menus available for tasting. How fabulous is that?

You will walk around and have some. (After you push me out of the way, of course.) When you bite into the delicacies, you will close your eyes and say “mmmm” and “ahhh” and other sounds that signify happiness and contentment.

At some point you will probably drop to your knees and thank the Good Lord for leading you to this blog so that you can learn about the Tastes event. Sure, it will be embarrassing and awkward, but I will attempt to capture that moment on film and broadcast it to the masses, while insisting that “really, you’ve thanked me enough. It’s not about me, after all, it’s the school and the children, and that’s Marinka with a K, by the way.”

If you are going to be in the NYC-area that weekend (first Saturday after Memorial Day Weekend, so feel free to wear white!), this is a fantastic opportunity to sample some of NYC’s best restaurants at one shot. Seriously, you’re not going to get them to come to you like this again.

The cost is $35 for a ticket (if you buy online, ahead of time. At the event it’s $45! See? You’re saving already!) And each $35 ticket entitles you to six tastes. Personally, I think it’s safer to buy two tickets to avoid the danger of malnutrition.

You’ll be helping a great NYC public school and eating fantastic food in NYC’s Meatpacking District. It’s almost like you’re a charitable and very beautiful extra on Sex & The City!

So order your tickets and then let me know if you’ll be there. Who knows, maybe I’ll talk you into getting cocktails afterward!

Even the fundraisers are cooler in New York City.

In all seriousness, I think I’m going to make you help me plan for how we can live in NYC after our trip.

You say you’re from the former Soviet Union, but I think you might really just be from California. Because my husband is from California, and he and everyone else I know from there says things like, “Should we go to the MacDonald’s for lunch or the Wendy’s?” They drive down “the I-75” to get from Detroit to Ohio. And they basically drive all their friends and spouses who grew up in other states crazy with their incessant usage of “the” in places it is totally the unnecessary.

In all fairness, I should probably follow up by saying that this “the” is most commonly applied to places (restaurants, stores) and streets, particularly highways. It’s times like these that I wish I knew someone dorky enough about regional grammar to explain why.

No, actually, I will not be in NY in June. I’ll be in TEXAS. It’s like you planned this whole charity event just to mock me.

Oh, I’m sure TEXAS will have something similar! With guns!

G-d, more people in Gansvoort Street! Like it’s not crowded enough between the Apple store and all the high-end clothed tourists ignoring the centuries old smell from the meat lockers. Then there’s all that fab restaurant food that makes your kids turn there noses up at your cooking! And if that’s not bad enough there’s a first-rate neighborhood school that’s free! If your kid can get into it…and then…what else can you complain about? The beautiful spring with air filled with pollen! The lovely breezes and flowers that…..

A fundraiser for a public school? God those slacker public school teachers never stop whining, do they? They’re all “but I have to buy school supplies with my own money” or “but there are so many kids in my classroom” and NOW they want us to fork over (hahaha is that a pun?) THIRTY-FIVE whole dollars to help the school pta? I suppose they’re saying they need the money because of all those scary budget-cut rumors floating around in the press…I’ve seen those classrooms at (the) Lab–they can totally hold like 45 kids, easy, so I don’t know why the teachers are complaining if they’re currently at 38 students per room. I mean, a 1-to-38 ratio? A big corporate honcho might have hundreds and hundreds of employees and you don’t see anyone having a fund-raiser for them, do you? Thirty-five dollars? Six plates? What’s that, a little more than six bucks a plate? Just so some teacher can have, like, workbooks and pencils? Puh-leez.
