Ike Davis is a Nice Boy

by Marinka on September 17, 2010

Young Ladrinka and I have lengthy conversations about who our favorite Mets player is.

You see, the Mets are his favorite team and he can talk about it endlessly. And if you think that endlessly is an exaggeration, I invite you to come over when you have an eternity to spare. Bring a snack. And toothpicks for your eye lids. And maybe earplugs.

I think his favorite player is David Wright (although it changes, and I tend to lose consciousness at minute 4 of our favorite player conversations).

My favorite is Ike Davis because he’s a nice Jewish boy and because his first name is Isaac, like my grandfather’s. I’m the kind of Mets fan who doesn’t like to get caught up in statistics and in how well someone’s playing. Because that could really hurt someone’s feelings and it’s not very nice.

I also like Chris Carter because he graduated from Stanford in three years. I think that means that he’s super smart and I like to imagine him explaining various scientific theories to his teammates on the bench.

But I like Ike better.

Because there was a story about how tonight is Yom Kippur and he was asked whether he’d play or not. Yom Kippur, for you goyim, is the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, when you’re supposed to atone and fast and not play major league baseball. And do you know what Ike said?

He said that he’d leave it up to his mother. (His mother is Jewish, his father is not. And from what I understand, although Ike is not observant, he considers himself culturally Jewish. Which I think means he likes bagels.)

Isn’t that so sweet?

There is absolutely no question that I can imagine Young Ladrinka responding to with “I’ll leave it up to my mother”.

By the way, Young Ladrinka likes Ike too. But for weird reasons, like the fact that he’s a good player and never argues with umpires.

The irony that my son admires someone for not arguing is not lost on me.

Don’t forget to repent!

The story has some S&M tinge and Isaac was already 37……
I just wonder what Abraham told him before bonding and putting him on the altar.
Thankfully I was not on the Abraham’s place. We would be all be pagans still.
I also dread baseball topics. So it could be genetic.
I hope that the fasting will be easy for everybody who is fasting. Feel sorry for the Hasidim’s they will have erotic dreams with matzo balls.

Culturally Jewish? I think I like that term. I am too.

I’ll leave it up to my mother….yeah, I can’t imagine an eight year old saying that. But a smart man? I can see it.

Snort at Awesome Dude. Erotic Matzo ball dreams? LMAO.

We are Yankees fans, but after what you’ve written, I LIKE IKE!

Are you Yankees fans because you like steroids?

There was a story in the NYT that 3 times as many criminals (or suspects, whatever) wore Yankees caps as Mets caps.

Um, I like bagels does that count?

You know after the mazo ball/erotic dream comment you can NEVER ban Papa right?

I don’t have a clue what Papa is talking about, but I enjoyed it.

I also like that Ike said he would leave it up to his mother. Perhaps playing major league baseball has softened his heart and someday it may work for Young Ladrinka too. Can’t wait for the blog post of Yom Kippur, 2025.

Jewish mother? It’s worse than culturally Jewish, which you can choose to be or not to be.You’re Hallachically Jewish. Which means you can’t escape the big oy vey.
