I’m Right, You’re Wrong!

by Marinka on November 16, 2011

Welcome back to I’m Right, You’re Wrong, a fun feature where you decide who’s right and who’s wrong.  Because you’re smart.  And almost unspeakably gorgeous.

To preserve the integrity of this process, I do not reveal which positions I and my archenemy of the moment have.  So you get to decide on merit alone, and not on who you like best.  We’re not shooting fish in the barrel here, you know.

Dilemma: As Marinka was writing a post, she used the word sonorific.  The dreaded red-line appeared underneath the post indicating either that Marinka was pregnant or that she mis-spelled the word.  She then Googled the word and although it appears that it was spelled correctly, Dictionary.com thinks that the word means something else.  So, what does sonorific mean? (No Googling!)

Disagreers: Marinka and Dictionary.com

Position One: Inducing sleep.  This warm milk is making me sonorific.  Yawn!

Position Two: Producing a sound.  My tummy is grumbling! How sonorific! Yikes!

What do you think?

Number two. The first is soporific.

Could it be that the word you where looking for is ‘soporific’?
I suggest taking the middle road and creating a new word : ‘snorific’. Meaning ‘snore-inducing’ or ‘will soon lead to me snoring’ as in ‘this morning powerpoint was snorific’

I agree with you. Had to rack my tired brain to figure out what was wrong with the word. It’s always the P that gets ya in trouble with polysyllabic words. I like the compromise word better than either original.

One of my favorite movies Wit discusses this word in detail, I agree, you’re looking for soporific.

I thought it meant the reaction a couple gets when the sex of their unborn child is determined, via the marvels of modern technology. But I’ll vote for sound.

That sounds like a word my eight year old made up. Not that you think like an eight year old boy or anything. But if he came to me and asked what it meant I’d tell him to go ask his Dad. So. Go ask my husband.

I think it is the second definition, having to do with sound.

Sonor = sound. Sonorific = producing sound.

Well I thought it refered to a really great male child, but as that is not an option, I will say inducing sleep.

Because I’m smart and unbelievably gorgeous (how did you know?!), I vote for sound inducing, the other soporific is sleep inducing which btw is not your blog, ever!!

It has to do with producing sound. Soporific = producing sleep. As in: “Reading badly-punctuated papers containing dull, unoriginal thinking about Victorian novels is particularly soporific when I don’t feel well.”

Also, just so you know, the tendency to fall asleep mid-sentence is not indicative of the condition “narcosleepy,” even though it seems like it should be. Narcolepsy sounds like a tendency to rat people out, but that, too, is incorrect. English is just hard.
