I’m Right, You’re Wrong: Is This Funny?

by Marinka on October 13, 2012

OMG, I can’t believe how long it’s been since I’ve had one of these posts here!

I know what you’re thinking– everyone has seen the wisdom of your ways, Marinka, and no longer disagrees with you. And in a way, yes. Yes, very true. But in another way, no, very not true. (It’s all very profound. Don’t overthink it.)

So this is the latest. As always, I will present the point of disagreement, but without letting you know who holds which position and you get to weigh in. It’s all very democratic and civilized unless you accidentally choose the wrong position and then it’s awkward for everyone. Especially you.

Shall we get started?

Disagreers: Marinka and some guy she married.

Disagreement: When someone says “I have to go back to San Francisco next week” is responding “Oh, why? Did you leave your heart there?” Thurber Prize-winning funny or not?

Position One: Yes, it’s very funny. Because everyone knows the song and it’s a fun nod to the cultural reference.

Position Two: No, it is not funny. It is the most obvious comment anyone can make about San Francisco. Humor needs an edge, not just a mindless repetition of what everyone knows already.

Choose wisely!

” mindless repetition” has an edge to it.

Oh boy. I think it was funny, funny, funny. Probably because I can imagine YOU saying it. If, however, HE said it, I might think it was NOT funny. NOT ONE BIT. So, if I have to choose: Funny. :-/

Only funny if it is said in the tone of voice that acknowledges that it is a kitschy sort of joke. That is, must be said in an ironic hipster sort of way that announces, “Look, I know old songs and I know the jokes our parents made about them.”

In other words, it is funny in the sense that “Take my wife…” is still funny. You need to follow it up with a ba-da-dum!

Sorry not funny at all.

What you should have said was, “San Francisco! I love San Francisco. I’ll start packing, too.”

Duh. Position one. Followed with a rendition of the Rice-A-Roni song.

I thought the most obvious thing to say would be : ‘put some flowers in your hair’…

I didn´t get that cultural reference. So for me, it wasn´t funny. Depends on background of the people witnessing this dialogue. Did the majority of those people knew that song?

Yes – ha ha ha, it was a good pun.
No – ehm ehm, what an awkward situation.

Obvious comments are very funny. That’s the point, we’re all in on it so it’s funny. Obviously.

The really funny part was the phrase “some guy she married.” And the word “disagreers.” Anyone who can coin a word like that deserves a trip to San Francisco. All expenses paid.
