I’m Right, You’re Wrong: Teacups

by Marinka on February 26, 2013

It’s I’m Right, You’re Wrong time again!

And this time, we’re going to tackle an important subject: How to do you store your teacups and saucers?

Because I thought the answer was pretty clear, i.e. like a normal person, but one of my friends has expressed a preference for teacup storing diversity.

So, without too much foreplay, let’s just recap the rules. I’ll give you the two positions with a mini-quote from each defender, but I won’t tell you which one of us holds which position, so this way, when you agree with me, your vote will be pure and untainted.

Ready?

Here we go!

Disagreement: How do you store your teacups?

Disagreers: Lisa, of Smacksy and Marinka, of Teacup Storing Anonymous

Position One: teacups

I stack them that way because I saw Martha do it and I am a Martha-lemming.

Position Two:

teacups-2

I stack them this way because I believe in teacup and saucer segregation.

So, what do you say? How do you stack your tea cups? The right way or the wrong way?

I’m just a little disturbed that both of you have matching tea cups and saucers. Weirdos.

I just realized I don’t have teacups, I have mugs; and I use the small plates from the same dish set as saucers. So I stack them separately, since we often need the small plates for other things and also my shelves aren’t far enough apart to stack mugs and saucers the other way.

But I LIKE the first way. IF I had real teacups and IF I had real saucers and IF my shelves were high enough, I might try it. Until the first time one of my kids knocked the whole damn thing over like a house of cards and I’d be back to using cheap-o mugs and fake saucers….

Suddenly, I feel strangely dissatisfied with the life I am leading.

I prefer the leaning tower of teacups in the second photo to the OCD stacks in the first.

i segregate. but i am FASCINATED by the stacking. the big problem with the pretty stacking is that it assumes you have LOTS and LOTS of room and shelves and space. which i don’t. so, plates in a stack, cups elsewhere.

I can’t believe I don’t have teacups and saucers! MUST GO SHOPPING.

I solve this dilemma by not owning cups and saucers. Problem solved!

My cups and saucers are in the tippy top of my cabinet, which I cannot reach. There could be a cup and saucer orgy going on up there for all I know. I can reach my mugs, so I use them for my tea. The tea bags? I usually slop them all over the place.

Shouldn’t the milk be stored in the refrigerator?

Reply

Kate February 28, 2013 at 2:28 pm

Ha! That was the first thing I noticed, too! It’s really unsettled me! 🙂

Mexmom February 26, 2013 at 11:40 am

Althought I like the Martha way, I stack them.

Like Peajaye, the first thought that came to my mind was “why is the milk in the cabinet?” So, ya……what’s up with that?

As for the teacup/saucer dilemma, I do prefer the Martha-lemming way.

Way # 2.

Because I like blue better than red, so the blue teacup person must be right.

And I have teacups, and I have saucers, but it’s not like they match or are made by the same cup ‘n saucer company or anything, so # 1 would be precarious.

What I really want to know is, what’s that, um, paraphernalia-looking thing in the back of pic # 2?

Position one, duh.

At first, all I could see was the milk in picture one, which I store in the fridge. But to each her own. As for the cups? The really fragile, too-nice-to-use, china from my grandparents lives in drawers. The mugs are on shelves. The cups and saucers are stacked like the blue ones. And, basically, I hate my kitchen cupboards, so I’m game for anything. But the red method looks super tippy and dangerous to me, like something my children would knock over in an instant if they reached up for something (which they would, even though there is nothing on that shelf that they need.)

mmm… but if you got rid of the children your shelves would look much nicer.

I kept wondering how one of you could afford not only organic milk, but then afford to keep it in a cupboard, thereby insuring the fact that you would have to buy more. So I choose the one who is throwing money around and please expect an email with my paypal address shortly.

Neither. You’re both abominations. You screw hooks into the shelf above and you hang the teacups off of them like a God-fearing American. Pray to be forgiven for your doctrinal errors.

Wait a minute – Martha stacks teacups? I used to watch her gardening show, she had an episode where the was planting tulip bulbs for spring – then the camera mistakenly included the landscaping crew with backhoe and cases of bulbs in the background. I’d guess her kitchen was kind of the same – kind of like Downton Abby – ‘Carlson, I’m ready for tea in the drawing room’

I feel like a Borrower assessing potential living situations. I think I’ll have to side with stacked because look at those tiny spoons in the little glass!

Reply

Suzanne February 26, 2013 at 3:04 pm

Totally do it the second way. But I can see how the first way makes sense too. No teaching me new tricks though. Segregation of teacups and saucers all the way!

Reply

Carmen February 26, 2013 at 4:16 pm

I stack mine like the second one, only not so tall of a tower, usually two short towers of cups. However, after I saw the first one I thought, hmmm that is genius. Now going to change them. Thanks! #1 wins!!

People younger than 80 own teacups? With matching saucers?

Mind. Blown.

I have been stacking them the wrong way. But after seeing this post, I will stack them the RIGHT way.

The right way, obviously, is Martha’s way.

I don’t really care who came up with each response, but now that I have seen the first option I will be storing my tea cups that way from now on until I die.

Mine are segregated, but no way would I let them teeter like that…just asking for trouble. BUT, I’m really intrigued by the Martha way. Is it sturdy? Do they rattle the whole tower when you pick them up? I need more info!

I’m not qualified to judge since I don’t have teacups.

Reply

Gdot February 27, 2013 at 10:15 am

I’m alittle more concerned that you keep your milk in the cupboard…. I mean what would Martha say?
Plus, I keep my tea cups in a china cabinet, unlike you heathens.

dusty earth mother February 27, 2013 at 12:44 pm

You’re both wrong. Obviously, the cups are on the drying rack and the saucers are in my kids’ rooms with various colors of paint in them. So this series shall now be called “I’m wrong, you’re wrong, Shari is right.”

Well I currently favour position 2 except I stack the wobbly cups on top of the saucers. I never even knew of position 1 but having seen it I realise it’s genius.

I never actually use the teacups and saucers obviously.

tracy@sellabitmum March 2, 2013 at 7:22 am

I’ve never even seen them stacked the first way, so Martha must be wrong. Segregation all the way!

I can’t see which way I do it under the thick blanket of dust, however my chipped coffee mugs are another story.

I do not have tea cups myself, but my four year old has lots of tea parties and she stacks hers the segregated method. She keeps her wooden milk carton in the cupboard as well.

Soonerdgs January 19, 2015 at 11:48 am

Ok, I get it that the cups don’t stack straight – but OMG can you not even stack the saucers straight… how hard can that be.
