Let Them Eat Cake

by Marinka on May 15, 2011

Last week, my kids’ school had Cake Day.

Everyone could participate and bake a cake at home and bring it to school to be admired and either donated or eaten afterwards.

Personally, I’m more of a cake eater than a cake baker. For some reason that life skill isn’t valued as much.

Unfortunately, Young Ladrinka had his heart set on making an Angry Birds cake.

“Fine,” I gave up. “But you have to find the recipe.”

He was on it. A few minutes later, he printed this out:

“This is not a recipe,” I told him. “A recipe tells you what the ingredients are.”

“Any idiot can see what goes into it,” he explained. “We need cake, and red, yellow and white colors.”

He had a strong point.

We made a box-mix cake and then added red food dye to the vanilla frosting. The box said to add 25 drops to transform vanilla frosting to red, but at drop 45 we were still at Horrifying OMG-MY CAKE IS RUINED pink, so we dumped the whole red dye container in, along with some of our blood, mixed with tears. Good thing that red dye is so healthy!

But the results were spectacular.

Behold:

Angry (and Possibly Constipated) Bird

I know what you’re thinking: Young Ladrinka and I should start taking cake orders.

I understand what you mean about being a cake eater and not so much a cake baker. But you did an awesome job!

Ha! I think I have finally found my match when it comes to cakebaking. Maybe we should go on the Ultimate Cake-Off together and show those good-for-nothings how it’s done.

Looks excellently angry!

In case you ever have another Red Cake Emergency, you need the paste type of food coloring. Wilton makes it. You can buy it in places like those giant craft supply stores or Target with all the other cake decorating supplies. It produces a dark fire-engine red with use of only about 1/4 tsp and has the advantage of not imparting a bitter taste to the icing (which normal red coloring will tend to do). I learned this when I had a soon-to-be-4-yr-old obsessed with fire trucks.

Now that is what I call a cake – I honestly couldn’t compete – I don’t cook, I stick to washing dishes

I love it.

As a cake maker, I deeply appreciate cake eaters. I have taken cakes to where there were no eaters, and that always sucks. Since the last time it happened, I’ve been thinking of just going all eater, all the time. I’d eat that bird cake for sure.

That IS an awesome cake. The pigs are sure to eat that rather than the angry birds’ eggs.

And lucky for you that Rovio – and not Disney – owns own the franchise, or you and Young Ladrinka might be in prison now for copyright violation.

Seriously, great cake! Did you ever see the picture of my Easter cupcakes that were supposed to be cute little chicks but turned out looking like very angry yellow angry birds?

Love the cake! He does look slightly constipated, but being that angry all the time can’t be good for the digestive system.
I made a red velvet cake, and the comments on the recipe said from the beginning that they need to double the coloring to get close to being red. I one up’ed the comments, and I got a super food coloring. I purchased it at Broadway Panhandlers but it’s also available on Amazon: Ateco food coloring. The color is more concentrated than the regular McCormick stuff. Red Velvet cake came out very red!!

One look at that cake and I instantly have an urge to fling it at the nearest green pig.

Yes, that’s a compliment.

I see someone else has already told you about the Wilton paste colors, but I have an addendum. They have several reds. Only one is ‘no-taste’ and is labeled as such. If you have to color just a little bit of icing, it doesn’t matter as much. For an angry bird, you would def. notice the bitterness if you didn’t get the no-taste kind.
