Nicki, Recovering

by Marinka on October 27, 2009

Nicki is recovering from her illness and I’ve been overwhelmed by your response.  Although, to be fair, I get overwhelmed really easily.

For those without bionic vision that is apparently required to look at the photographs that I put up and couldn’t see the vet bill on the last post, it’s $627.93.

So yesterday afternoon, the hospital calls me and asks how she’s doing.  And I say, “well, when I last saw her at 8 am, she wasn’t interested in food or water.”  And they say, “what about since then?”  And I’m like,”I haven’t been home since then, so who knows?” And then I heard the Silence of Disapproval.  Like, what am I supposed to do, take time off from my life of leisure and monitor what Nicki’s doing?  The truth is that my stepson was at home and I texted him to ask what Nicki was doing and he took a really long time to respond, which I assumed meant that he was looking up “DEAD” in the dictionary and/or performing CPR on her.  But then he texted back “she’s sitting in the living room” and I didn’t want to push my luck by asking if she’d eaten or pooped. You know how teenagers are.

Mama came over at around 3 and made some boiled chicken for Nicki because the vet said to do that. Nicki wasn’t interested.  Then she gave her some low residue food (which apparently means that there will be low residue of money in your wallet after you pay for it) that I bought from the vet, again, at the vet’s recommendation.  Here’s a hint.  If you’re buying a can of cat food that has French writing on it, it’s going to  be expensive.  Look for a brand that has Ebonics.

Now with more intestines!

Now with more intestines!

By the way, what’s with the French?  How come we figured out that we can call the gastro-intestinal tract  “GI Tract” and they’re still all “tractus gastro-intestinal”?  This is precisely why no one likes them.

Needless to say, Nicki had no interest in it.

Nicki did have an interest in Fancy Feast, the McDonald’s of cat food. But only after I smeared it on my finger and fed it to her.  Yes, she likes being finger fed now.  I’m taking applications for volunteers.  I will pay in cans of low residue cat food.

Resting comfortably. Knowing that she did her part to boost the economy.

Resting comfortably. Knowing that she did her part to boost the economy.

If you would like to help with Nicki’s medical expenses and the self-medicating expenses that I have incurred as a result, we now offer several levels of sponsorship.  For our cheaper donors, consider becoming a Hairball for only $5, or upgrade yourself to a Whisker for $25.  If you are feeling more generous, we welcome your participation as a Stripe for $50 or a Paw for $100.  We know that some other blogs offer Paw sponsorship for $75, but those cats are declawed and Nicki is clawed.  If you’d like to impress your family and friends with your donation, how about becoming an Ear?  $250 and you’re sure to be the talk of the  blogosphere around mite season.  Or grab both, while they’re available for $550.  What? You thought you’d get a discount if you got two?  This is a charity, not a  clearance sale.  Finally, if you’re the reincarnation of Brooke Astor,  the Tail is just for you.  Inquire for sponsorship rates.

I wonder if Nicki knows how close she is to being tossed out a window.

Give Nicki a hug for me, the crazy, currently catless, cat lady.

I know the French are an easy scapegoat, but in this case, I’m quite sure the Canadians are to blame.

And I don’t even boil chicken for my KIDS!

Assist feeding her is the best thing you can do for her right now. It’s just how cats are when they are sick. It’s a pain but if she goes for more than a day without eating, you can take that vet bill and multiply it by 3.

Fortunately, she’s back to eating by herself. Why are you trying to kill me with the “multiply by 3” stuff? Not only is that expensive, but it’s mathy.

What I’ve learned from this is that apparently we’ve been feeding our cats – cats! Three of ’em! – high-residue cat food. Which… well, that can’t be good.

I’m so happy that others can learn from my experience. Hey, how about going halfsies on the price of the lesson with me?

I’ve been reading your blog and holding my sides for a while now but this one really gave me a snort. If you set up a sponsorship fund for yourself, sign me up for whatever level will provide you with a bottle of quality wine 😉

I think I’ll get a big bang for my buck with a hairball, so count me in! But only if you send it to me. . .

The French were rioting today about a soccer game cancelled due to the flu. Nicki’s condition has gone international.

PS
Is that Nicki on the can of IAMS? Maybe you are owed some roylaties.

I think that you are absolutely right. IAMS is going to be sorry that they ever messed with me. Or however you say that in French.

We once had a vet bill like that for a dog who had a fever. It turns out that if a dog eats a diaper, it is not good for her digestion. And contrary to the dog’s opinion, if she eats a whole bunch of grass after the diaper, it doesn’t help. It takes lots of x-rays and a doggie enema to fix it. And many hundreds of dollars.

So, what I’m saying is that I should obviously be your vet, since I have correctly diagnosed Nicki’s problem as ingested diaper.

Well, you weren’t far off. Tonight Nicki bowel moved feathers. They were from my daughter’s Lady Gaga costume. Mama pointed out that my daughter’s costume cost over $600.

I looked into pet insurance after our cat was burned by the muffler and needed blood work and xrays completed. The final cost was more than a pair of Louboutins. The freaking over-priced french.

Obvioulsy Nicki read your blog and thought you were selling her body parts pre-mortum. Guess it was enough to cough up those gaga feathers!

I am glad she is doing better and you apparently found the cause. I was going to say that I bought baby food for Soma when he had some kind of problem a long time ago and the vet offered the $pecial bland food that would be better for his digestion and he of course hated it. But he liked the baby food a lot. You know, the chicken and beef, not the apricots and pears so much.

Once again you made me laugh out loud and now I had to explain the whole Nicki saga to my husband. “Look for a brand that has Ebonics” — ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

Your cat was sick and you went to work?

Wait until you see Nicki’s therapy bills. You’ll look back fondly on the $627 vet bill.
