Reading With Children

by Marinka on February 13, 2010

Young Ladrinka and I have been reading a lot together lately. It just sort of happened. I would be reading and he would join me with his own book, and we’d sit there for dozens and dozens of minutes, reading.

Sometimes we read the same series, like The Diary of a Wimpy Kid , with my lagging a book or two behind him, but usually we read our own books.

Right now he’s reading The Sea of Monsters, which is the second of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians books and I’m reading something for my monthly book group.

He wants to know what page I’m on, what chapter, to see if he’s ahead of me, even though we’re reading different novels.

Last night he asked to see the cover of my book. “This House is Where I Tree Leave a Novel You,” he read. “Weird name.”

I don’t know why I never noticed it before. But I’m so glad that he pointed it out to me.

haha, book cover designers should survey more carefully with young readers 😉

Isn’t that the greatest. We call those “reading dates” and they beat the hell out of “boardgame dates” and “arguing over homework dates”.

So, what do you think so far? I love Jonathan Tropper, this ranks up there with “Book of Joe,” which if you haven’t read it is a must!!

The internet has something to say about over observant kids:

What a funny cover. What is the book about?
I think it’s great you and your son can sit and read together. If I asked my son to sit with me and read he would ask me what freakin planet I am from and that shit ain’t happenin. So sad.

Hee Hee! My kid would have prob said the same thing. Did Ladrinka like the Percy Jackson movie? We saw it yesterday and liked it a lot.

He’s a smart (and literal) lad. I think it’s very cool that you read separate books together. I’ve been lamenting that soon Jude won’t want me to read to him. Maybe this is a nice next step.

And they say reading is good for the brain.

I read that book last month and my seven year old son also read the cover as if it were a rebus puzzle. What are you thinking of the book? It hasn’t quite lived up to its hype. In fact, I got more laughs from the wimpy kid books. Enjoy your book time together.

Awesome. Just goes to show you that test markets are useful for all sorts of things beyond the names of new products and car commercials.

That is by far, one of the funniest yet not funny, at all books I have ever read.

Very cute. And good choices! I love Tropper, and I think his latest is his best.
