Rosé

by Marinka on June 17, 2011

Last week I had dinner with Stacy. And if you’re not reading her blog, I have nothing more to say to you.

Except go read it. (She also wrote one of my favorite memoirs of the year, Falling Apart in One Piece, so go read that too. Gosh, you have a lot to do. I hope you didn’t have any plans.)

Anyway, Stacy and I were dining and wining and we had a bottle of rosé. And it was so good that I wondered why I ever bothered drinking anything else in the summer.

So a few days ago I presented myself at the wine store and asked for a bottle of crisp, delicious rosé. The wine store guy recommended Muga:

Bottle of rosé, aerial view. Because the farther you get from it, the better

I don’t like it. I hate to be the suspicious type, but I think the wine guy purposely recommended the kind that I wouldn’t like so that I’d come back for another (possibly more expensive) bottle of wine. Look times are tough and everyone’s out to make a buck.

Good thing I’m wise to his plan.

And to teach him a lesson that his deviousness won’t work, I’m going to drink the wine I don’t like. And maybe get another bottle of the exact same rosé it so that he doesn’t catch on about how I’m suffering.

Don’t tell him.

But if you have a rosé that you love, please let me know.

As a matter of fact, I do. It’s Galil Mountains Rose. http://www.galilmountain.co.il/English/About
here it is:

but actually everything they make is very good.

My husband’s favourites are Riojas. Not Rose, but the reds from that region. I don’t care much for wine. But if you really want to treat yourself, my friend from back home makes this divine Sparkling Rose Pinot Nero. The wine maker is called Movia. Here is the list of shops in NY: http://www.wine-searcher.com/find/movia+puro+sparkling+rose+pinot+nero+slovenia
And here is the families website: http://www.movia.si

Do you know what kind you got when you had dinner with Stacy? Sorry I don’t have any recommendations for you. I’m a Pinot Grigio girl during the summer.

Trader Joes carries a great South African rose called Mundelbrosch or something like that; the label goes down the length of hte bottle. And there’s a sancerre that someone served the grownups at a kids’ bday party (thus winning Best Birthday Award): Sancerre Jean-Paul Ballard 2009; it’s more expensive than the south african (damn frenchies) but so nice and like summer in a glass, even if (like now) it’s pouring down goddamn rain and smells like garbage outside.

Ditto on the Mulderbosch. And it has a lovely “M” on the screw cap.

This is the most delicious stuff ever. Sadly, you can’t get it in a store and only order online http://www.jwwine.com/catalog/item/7141765/7286044.htm
but at $19/bottle it’s a good deal. I served it at my wedding. Big hit!

I love rose when the weather is warm. Unfortunately, it never gets warm in the bay area so I haven’t been drinking a lot of rose, dammit.

Muga. A name to be wary of. It might take a couple of bottles to figure out why.

Hey, what’s this wine salesman’s name? I’ve got some relatives in Little Italy who could “talk” to him.
Mike’s recommendation on the wine: WWTNYTD – What Would The New York Times (as opposed to Jesus, who’d just make his own) Do? I guess the NYT has a page on their site of recommendations.

I actually started a blog way back when about roses, called Queen of Roses, because I thought they didn’t get much coverage. I tried a bunch of them and after 10 or so, I realized that I didn’t really like roses that much.

That being said…the other night I had a very nice $3.99 rose of tempranillo from Fresh & Easy called…something. Crap.

I marvel at the way you see right through the malicious plans of the wine story guy! He should have known better than to play games with you.

On the shores of Lake Michigan there is this amazing winery called Karma Vista. I have never had anything there I didn’t like, and one of my favorites is a rose called “Pink Side of the Moon”. It is cheap (although probably less so if you have to it shipped), delightful, and has been at the center of many wonderful evenings with my friends. Also the bottle is amazing!

My suggestion would be to find a store with free tastings. Assuming you don’t find anything you like, by the end of your time there it won’t matter if there’s a tasty rosé or not.

Because my MIL likes rose, I tried a few before I found this one that was drinkable enough to review:
