Spanking

by Marinka on June 23, 2012

Last week I wrote a post for Babble, If You Spank Your Kids, We Can’t Be Friends, and it got, shall we say, an interesting response.

Turns out people don’t like it when I tell them what to do with their lives, or their children. Go figure.

You’d think more people would flock to me for wisdom and guidance.

So I was telling Husbandrinka about how I was getting a lot of flack about my post on spanking and he says, “so are you for it or against it?”

Which is a fair question to ask me, of course.

I mean, it’s not like we had children together or anything.

man oh man. you did get a lot of flack – as you put it. i could not bear to join the discussion over there–there was so much hostility flying around! i think a lot of commenters misunderstood the tone of your post–taking your supposed withheld friendship and lines such as “adorably insane” way too seriously. hopefully you won’t do the same and take THEM too seriously! i’ve never understood why people have so much fun being angry in comments. and who knew there were so many spankers in the world!! i had no idea!

welllll didn’t YOU provoke a little firestorm over there in babble-land. goodness. I find myself wondering who all these people are who have time to angst over whether or not some (brilliant wise beautiful funny) writer they’ve probably never met agrees with their parenting disciplinary methods. Has the entire country lost its sense of humor? Given where Romney stands in the polls these days, I can almost believe it – unless his standings are a massive prank being played on all of us by some leftie computer-hacking organization designed to make us think that almost half the country has lost its mind. By which I mean: kids should not be spanked. Romney supporters, perhaps.
(and small terminology question: is a “swat” a “spank?” Because I may have once or twice performed the former, for which I am heartily abashed, but I’ve never done the latter.)

I wonder how many of your online friends snuck away from that blog post without commenting because they don’t want you to know that they are spankers and risk losing your friendship. I mean not ME…I would never spank a child. NEVER. How could anyone raise a hand to those adorable, helpless creatures!?!!?

*cough*

That’s a good point, Kat. I’m sure there are many people who I love and consider good friends who do spank. Obviously these people are going to have to be demoted to second tier friendship until further notice.

I love that your husband didn’t know your view on spanking.

I read it and saw the comments, I think some people didn’t undestand that you were just being funny and of course you wouldn’t be friends with angry people anyway, spankers or not.

I spank. Sorry. But never when I’m really mad and feel like I’m not in control – only when a kid is openly defiant or crossing the street into traffic when I’ve yelled no. I think I’ve only done it a couple of times for each kid.

And now they’re cherubs. What can I say? (cough)

Smacks of friendship probation, if you ask me.
