Sponsored Video: Halloween Stresses Me Out

by Marinka on October 25, 2012

I know there are adults who love Halloween, but I sort of hate it. I remember the first year we “celebrated” it after arriving in NYC from Russia. I remember I was Raggedy Ann, not because I had any special affection for Raggedy Ann nor did I know who the hell she was but because my mother found a mask on sale and said “It fits! Great!”

And it did fit over my face and since I could breathe through both the nose holes and the mouth hole, I didn’t see much room for complaining, but I still sort of didn’t get it.

Why do I have to dress up? Why do I have to say Trick or Treat? Why can’t I just buy candy and eat in the comfort of my home?

Now that I’m a mom, I try to get into the Halloween spirit, but it is still sort of soul crushing to me. Earlier this week, for example, my 11 year Young Ladrinka asked me to make a costume for him. He had this vision, you see, to be some character from Magic The Gathering, and since there are no costumes on the market for that character yet, he thought I could just put it together. Do you know what it’s like to look at our only son and say “sorry, kid. You got the wrong mom”? He asked me to please try, he offered suggestions “all we need to do is get a magician’s robe and a glowing globe” but I had to nip that thing in the bud. Because I have many things going for me, but putting things together is just not one of them.

“I’m sorry,” I told him. “I can’t.” And he looked crushed. Because he really wanted to be this weird Magic the Gathering Character and he really wished that I could help him.

But fortunately, a few minutes later we went online and found a costume that would do in a pinch. Some generic zombie nightmare, or “a gift from Heaven” as I like to call it. Because it involved me doing absolutely nothing except getting my credit card out. Simple pimple!

So thank you to Kmart for making costume shopping easy and painless.

Please check out this sponsored video from Kmart, which set the World Record for the most costume changes in 8 hours. (I’m guessing Cher held the previous title!)

This post is sponsored by Kmart, but all of the opinions are my own. Obviously.

I am ALWAYS saying, “Sorry, kid, you got the wrong mom.” And I don’t even feel bad about it. I like to be authentic with them. At least, that’s what I told their therapists.

I think in her Vegas show she still holds the record.

I don’t know about that record. Does it count when a teenager tries on everything in her closet in one hour or less but still has nothing to wear, and her dad thinks everything she has looks like some kind of costume?
