The Finger

by Marinka on February 7, 2013

Yesterday Young Ladrinka injured his middle finger in basketball. The finger “hurts” and also “really hurts” and as a result he’s holding his hand approximately a mile away from his body. I don’t know why.

I showered him with adoration and sympathy, but he insisted that he needed to receive medical treatment in case it’s “broken or worse.” I have no idea what the “or worse” would be in this situation, but I’m not a doctor and the last thing I need is the Humane Society to get involved and accuse me of withholding medical treatment from my child while not being Amish or a Christian Scientist or something. So to simplify things, this morning, Husbandrinka and I decided that he’d be the one to take him to the doctor since I’m positively useless before my second cup of coffee.

They went to the doctor and I prayed that it was nothing serious and wouldn’t require an amputation because my husband is a wonderful man, but he absolutely sours at the sight of blood. Really makes the Twilight role playing damn near impossible.

So off they went to the medicine man, and the good news is that there is no fracture, and the bad news for Young Ladrinka is that he had to go back to school. Probably to learn to fracture better.

His finger still hurts, though, so please don’t think that you should stop worrying for a second.

In the meantime, I’m compiling a list of things he told me he positively cannot do now:

1. Read a book. Flipping pages is really hard when your finger hurts. Even though he has a Kindle, it still requires the flipping motion.

2. Eating potato chips while watching TV. He tried holding the bag o’chips in one hand but could not use the other one to pick up the chips. Necessity being the mother of invention, though, he finally balanced the chips bag on his lap and used his good (as in not yet injured) hand to retrieve the chips.

3. I hope it goes without saying that beloved activities, like putting dishes into the dishwasher, are faint albeit precious memories.

4. Piano? I don’t-think-ano!

But we’re slowly adjusting to the new normal. Of one handed potato chip consumption. It really slows things down.

Maybe I should follow his lead. I’ve eaten way to many chips lately.

The great news is that this probably qualifies you for some kind of specialized government assistance. Milk it, baby!

XOXO

My son hurt his finger playing baseball and my expert-at-bodily-injury husband declared it fine. Every day at school, the following week, Junior would go see the “nurse” (really a health aide) as it was hurting. She called us repeatedly and finally shamed us into taking him to the doctor. Of course it was broken.

I don’t take the rap for this one though. That’s all on dear old dad.

Yes, the poor suffering boy. You’re not sitting next to him and feeding him the chips to ease his pain?

Now I can’t stop picturing you and Husbandrinka doing Twilight role playing.

My son fractured his middle finger (what’s up with boys and middle fingers?!!) and he talked the doctor into fixing the plaster in such a way that he would still have use of his thumbs….so that playing the Wii would not be in jeopardy even if piano practice and chores were out of the question!
