What I Want

by Marinka on November 24, 2009

Last week, I attended Alpha Mom‘s inaugural Huddle.  If you are not familiar with Alpha Mom, get thee to the website and feast on its glory.  And I’m sorry to tell you that Isabel, who is the Alpha and also the Mom behind it, is so lovely and gracious that it really is a bit hard to take.  I keep wanting to tell her that people who look like her don’t have to be nice to the hoi polloi, but I have a feeling that she wouldn’t listen.  It’s like all my Mean Girls training is for naught.

Anyway, the idea behind the Huddle goodness is that it’s lunch and a presentation, all in an hour. It was wonderful. I got to see some blogging friends and even met a blog icon.  And then Isabel introduced Swiss Miss, Tina Roth Eisenberg.  If you ever have a chance to hear Tina talk or see one of her presentations, definitely do it. She spoke about design, a topic that I have almost no interest is, but she talked about it in a way that was moving and inspirational.

Yes, Tina inspired me.  She rejuvenated me.  And she made me more excited about blogging.  One of Tina’s beliefs is that beauty is everywhere, and having heard her talk, I am convinced that not only is everything beautiful, but everything is interesting. (Full disclosure:  I had a full lunch plate on my lap, so while others were taking notes, I was busy eating.  So, Tina may have actually said that everything is interesting, instead of everything is beautiful. Either that, or nothing is.  Really, who knows?  But lunch was delicious.)

Tina talked about blogging and her job, and the melding of the two.  Tina talked about the emails that she gets.  Someone wrote to her and said “Your blog makes me happy.”  Isn’t that nice?  I found that super moving and then I thought about how I never get those emails and how it’s totally your fault.  Yes, your fault.

Now I am enraged.

Because you read my blog, and you suck the marrow from my blog bones and you give me absolutely nothing in return. Sure, maybe a comment here, a tweet there.  You may stumble me, or if I’m really lucky, you’ll subscribe to my feed.  (By the way, is that me, or does it sound like we’re sharing a feed bag?  Because if so, sucks to be you, I eat like a horse.)  Do you ever email me with “your blog makes me happy?”  No, you do not.

Don’t bother, it’s too late now.  Because if you “your blog makes me happy” me now, I’ll know it was a pity email.

But maybe it’s my fault.  Maybe if I’d let you know what I wanted in return sooner, you’d be able to provide it and there wouldn’t be all this resentment and bad feelings and hatred.

Maybe it’s not too late.

I want this.  Please. I promise to keep the blog posts coming.

Thank you.  Your gift makes me happy.

How about, “Your blog makes me laugh”? Laughter leads to happiness, right? Right?!

Why are there quotes around that?!

Kimberly/Mom in the City November 24, 2009 at 1:02 pm

The quotes are because I have told you that many times before. Actually, I think that I’ve said YOU make me laugh many times before. BUT when I say, “You”, I mean everything that you write and say. So, that includes your blog. Now, I’M confused…but laughing 🙂

I’m with Kimberly, your Blog makes me laugh and it’s not easy to do these days living in Germany with all the grumpy people! That house is so amazing but do you really want to walk to the fourth floor to do laundry? Is there an elevator cause if not that’s a deal breaker!

That’s an excellent point. I’m so low maintenance that I didn’t even think about the elevator!

I am a bleary-eyed addict of your blog. Soon they will find me in a gutter, emaciated and muttering through my dry, cracked lips: “Marinka… i need Marinka…”

You know, Marinka, I think it’s all about Karma. We should go around and email a bunch of people telling them their blog makes us happy. And that alcohol does too, but they don’t need to know that. Then we can sit back and await the flooding of our inboxes with I LOVE YOUR BLOG emails.

I love your blog so much that my husband is jealous that I always check yours before his. Whenever I’m laughing out loud at the computer he rolls his eyes and says I must be reading my FAVORITE blog again–in a v. snotty voice. And I take it all, b/c your blog makes me so very happy.
And I don’t even have a blog to push with my comment!

You don’t really want that slummy place. The “fully landscaped” garden out back is just a giant flagstone patio with some bushes around the perimeter and one cheap wooden bench to sit on. Talk about a rip off! Also, do you know why the entrance to the kitchen is under the front stoop, and the kitchen opens onto the garden? Because back in the 1800s when the place was built, only servants worked in the basement kitchen, and the tradesmen who delivered meat and veg needed a separate entrance so as not to offend the family with their working-class hands. Do you really want to live in a house where you feel like a servant every time you go into the kitchen?

If I ever “squee”ed I would “squee” when I see a post by you pop up on my reader, but I don’t “squee” as a matter of principle so I don’t.

But I would. If I did.

Sure, I’ve told you that you’re clever and funny, but I guess that’s not enough. It’s never enough; it’s always about you! “Marinka this, Marinka that…”
What about me? What about all of your thousands of followers? Huh, did you ever think of that?!?
Not only do I heart you, but I have actually shared some things you’ve said with my ex husband and 15 year old daughter. Who didn’t give a crap, but that’s not the point. You get the point, right?

I’m thinking that I should now edit the main post to something totally different so that all these comments seem more unsolicited.

Thanks, everyone.

P.S. I still want the townhouse.

Marinka,

Your blog makes me very happy, I just didn’t want to tell you because I was sure you would think I was a sycophant. But I will tell you a true story: I was online at the library and reading your blog– it was so funny and I was trying not to laugh out loud so I was making choking noises, tears were coming out of my eyes and my chest was heaving–I’m sure everyone thought I was having fit of some kind. And all because of you. Needless to say I ‘m not allowed in the library any more. But I still love your blog.

I always mean to comment that your blog makes me happy but then I think you are so awesome that you must know already without my telling you. I can see that I was mistaken.

Your blog makes me happy, my day is not complete unless I’ve had my dose of Marinka. After reading any post I instantly feel more cosmopolitan, witty and better about my life.

Dear Marinka…

I am a better person because of you. You have inspired me to do things to the fullest extent possible. I never knew what I was made of until I started reading your beautiful blog. Not only do you make me happy, you make me complete. Without you, I don’t feel I can succeed in life.

I cannot find the words to describe my true appreciation for you and all you do. Your heart is made of platinum…because I don’t wear gold.

You are a blessed human and I am in awe.

Did that work? Or a little overkill? But hey, if you believe all of that, I seriously need to become a writer!!

HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE

You are awesome!
