Wordful Wednesday

by Marinka on October 28, 2008

I panic easily.  A few times each week when I get out of the subway and look down Fifth Avenue, I become very concerned.  Because the Empire State Building is missing.  And apparently, I am the only one who notices, because everyone else is going about their business like nothing is wrong.  This is way too much responsibility for me.

See?  Where is the Empire State Building is not there.

But then I walk a little more, and suddenly The Empire State Building reappears.  What a relief! Although, uh-oh.  The light has now turned red and  I can’t cross the street.

On Tuesday, I walked past the Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Park Avenue. All the important political people stay at the Waldorf when they come to NYC and then the traffic around there is a nightmare.

Question:  Doesn’t it look like someone left an Emmy on top of the hotel?

And follow up question:  Doesn’t $400 million seem like sort of a lot to spend on the restoration?  I’m pretty sure that I could have done it for $399 million.

This week we’re taking a break from the Saks Fifth Avenue window displays because they betrayed us last week by being superdull and also because I was uptown and saw these beautiful Bergorf Goodman windows.

I love how the mannequins have that high fashion pose of being all hunched over. I can never figure out what the bad posture is all about, but John thinks that when models pose like that, they are supposed to resemble hangers. Maybe it’s one of those “No More Hangers!” pro-choice campaigns?

That’s where the extra million went….putting the Emmy replica on the hotel. All the licensing fees. Pity. I’m sure that you could have found a better use for that.

Thank you for shouldering the responsibility of the Empire State Building for all of us.

I can’t think of anyone more qualified for the job.

They should spend a little so those mannequins can catch up on their calcium intake.

I love your window pictorals. One of my favorite things to do in New York is to check out the windows of the higher end department stores (Bergdorf and Bendel’s are my favorites) – especially in December. I made Chris stand in line with me to see the Saks holiday windows a few years ago. It was freezing and he really didn’t see the point. We are apparently not soul mates – but I guess you sometimes have to settle for other B list qualities like integrity, moral ethics, blah blah blah.

I was going to comment on the mannequin posture – um, who exactly walks around like that? I mean, if you aren’t Golim from LOTR?

PS. My word verification today is “resentin” which, add a “g” on the end, and… Is it trying to tell me something? Like maybe I shouldn’t make fun of these high-fashion models? Like maybe there is something else going on in my little mind? Hmmm… Blogger, are you reading my mind? Because if you are, you’ve got it wrong. I don’t care about those mannequins all that much – but I DO very much resent that my co-worker is eating a chocolate pastry right now and she didn’t bring one to share with me!!!

I can hardly wait for the Christmas time pictures of people falling on their ass (asses? what is the plural for ass?) while skating at Rockefellar.

Peace out.

I love your pics!! And I love that there’s not just one. I can (and do) live vicariously through your blog and I LOVE IT.

Might have to call myself Katrinka for a few minutes each Wednesday. Hmm.

Wow, you are really doing your part to live up to the NYC in your title… saving me a fortune in plane fares. Because soon, I will have seen it all! Wonderful!

And those models? Well, they are hunched over because they are required to be a size -4. They survive on a lettuce leaf a day which has lead to premature osteoporosis.

What is it with your word verification today? I got “ovenspu”.

Once again, making me jealous of what you see on your commute.

They so could have done it for 399.

LOL… I was so going to mention the way that they are posed. I mean, do you stand like that in a gorgeous ballroom gown?

I’ve decided I could have done it for 200 bucks.

(Love your photos……)

Wouldn’t it be great if you could break that story right here, on your blog, though. Empire State Building Missing!!

Some of those mannequins are going to end up with a horrible hunchback if they don’t start watching their posture! Oiy!

I don’t envy you all the people you must encounter living and working in NYC, but I do envy you the culture! And how!

Damn you’re funny.

That’s all.

Oh, man, I’d stand all lame like that if I had that bitchin’ gown. Fo shizzle. You know, if that’s what it takes.

It’s interesting how you take your surroundings in and think about them. When walking through downtown Chicago I don’t think people (except the tourists) notice anything because they’re walking so damn fast.

More windows! (But maybe with fewer stick-figure mannequins, if I’m allowed to be choosy.)
