A Casual Conversation

by Marinka on October 4, 2011

Marinka, we need to talk.

Yes, dear.

My secretary said you called me five times today.

I did.

Was there an emergency?

Sort of. But she said that you were in a meeting and I didn’t think that it was an interruptable emergency.

What was wrong?

I was at Hudson News at Penn Station looking for Cat Fancy

Cat food?

No, Cat Fancy is a magazine. About cats and the people who fancy them. Anyway, I asked for the pet magazine section and they led me there but there were only dog magazines.

So?

So then I went to Barnes & Noble and asked their magazine section supervisor about cat magazines and they said they don’t carry those.

Why did you call me?

I was feeling judged. Like they said that they didn’t carry it, but they said it in this “I’m better than you” way. I didn’t like it.

Why did you call five times?

Because I went to three more magazine places and none of them had it either. This is New York City. How can they not have cat magazines?

This is not a real conversation, is it? You’re just making this shit up for blog fodder, right?

What do you mean? I told you I quit blogging months ago.

I don’t believe you.

I don’t need your disbelief on top of the day that I’ve already had today.

I don’t see the tragedy of your day, except you wasting your time looking for “cat magazines”.

Why are you air quoting Cat Magazines? Besides, I only wanted one.

Well maybe if you didn’t spend hours looking for a cat magazine, you wouldn’t have to work tonight. I really wanted us to go out to dinner tonight.

I told you. I’m busy working tonight. We can go tomorrow.

Working? You’re sitting here reading Cat Fancy. Wait, I thought you couldn’t find it.

That was the piece de resistance of my story. Finally I’d given up and just went home and they had it at the news stand right on our corner.

A miracle.

I know you’re mocking, but yes, a little bit of a miracle. It was the last copy, too, so I was very lucky to get it.

So now instead of going out to dinner you’re going to sit there are read Cat Fancy. That’s working?

Do you understand absolutely nothing? I am in the cat industry now. I have a website whose sole focus is cats. If I want to claw my way to the top, ha ha, I have to stay on top of industry trends.

If you ever have a nervous breakdown, I won’t be able to tell.

Oh, I have a feeling that you’ll pick up on it.

This website, please tell me more about it.

It’s wonderful. Originally it was just to promote the book, Wanted:Cat, about our journey to adopt Nicki, who, as you know, is our cat. But then it turned into so much more.

That is very interesting, Marinka. Might you have the address of the website?

Indeed, I might. And I will give it to you, Husbandrinka. Because spouses shouldn’t keep secrets from each other.

Thank you. I will wait for the link.

It is here, my beloved. Please make sure to explore its many features, for there is a lot of enjoyment to be had.

I will check it out immediately. I look forward to many hours of fun and education.

My husband often asks whether or not my conversations are real, or just for th
E purpose of my blog. Men, they understand nothing at all.

That was the best made-up-for-purposes-of-advertising-my-new-site conversation I’ve read in a long time.

I like the new site. Really I do. But my cat is now pissed off that she doesn’t have her own site. I suspect she’ll be calling me a lot at work today to complain.

“If you ever have a nervous breakdown, I won’t be able to tell.” Husbandrinka is very droll, is he not?

Fun!

I’m not much of a cat lover, but this made me smile. As usual. 🙂

Can I be at your book launch? I do expect an invitation!

I’m surprised about this shortage of cat magazines. I would think there would be an ample supply out there, then again dogs are superior. =)

The cat website is very nice, but there’s no picture of the anus. You let me down.

My 5th grade boyfriend bought me Cat Fancy for Christmas right before we broke up. Also, it had an article on cat sex — a knowledge that I have never recovered from.

And with that hanging preposition, I’m out. Wait, is that another one?

So you could pretty much substitute the word “cats” for anything else and this is a conversation my future husband have at least once a week. haha. Bravo!

I would think Manhattan would be busting at the seams with cat magazines. If it’s this hard for you track what down, what about the people of Idaho?

Hello: I laughed as I was reading the conversation in the search for Cat Fancy magazine. I have been doing that same thing the past couple of weeks… looking for stores that carry Cat Fancy magazine. Our local pet store, Pet Expo, did not have it, and neither did the chain store, PetCo. So I ended up subscribing to it! And all I really want is the October 2012 issue because my cat, Cleo, is on the cover and on a poster inside!!! SO this made me chuckle.
