An iPad2 For You! If You Win, That Is

by Marinka on August 26, 2011

Update 8/30/11: Thank you to everyone who entered the giveaway. Andrea from Good Girl Gone Redneck won the iPad2! Yay, Andrea! And remember, if you didn’t win, there are other iPad2 giveaways going on here! Good luck1!

Guess what?

It’s contest time!

It’s sponsored by Vonage‘s new “Time to Call App”. The Time to Call â„¢ App is a free download on your iPhone, iTouch or iPad that allows you to call overseas for very inexpensive rates! Why, at these rates, you could talk and talk!

What could be better? Or more wholesome?

Here’s what you need to know!

  • * Pay per call and talk for up to 15 minutes to 100 countries for $1.99 or less (excluding applicable taxes)
  • * For an additional 90+ countries, talk up to 15-minutes for $2.99 to $9.99 (excluding applicable taxes)
  • * Bill directly to your iTunes account
  • * Works on Wi-Fi® worldwide
  • * Also for use on high quality 3G networks in the U.S. and Canada
  • * For a limited time, unused minutes can be used for additional calls
  • * No need to be a Vonage home customer, no hidden fees or monthly commitment

As a Russian Doll, this is great news for my family for when we call family back in Old Country.

Right now Vonage is having a limited time offer where you can download the Time to Call App and call up to 15 minutes for free. (No purchase required.) More info on that can be found here.

And as though that’s not enough, there’s a contest!

The fine people at Vonage will be giving away to one superlucky person an Apple gift card for the Apple iPad 2, 32 GB.

You can get an entry for doing any one of the following:

Leave a comment on this post letting me know who you’d call abroad and what would you say. What? Excuse me for being a voyeur. (One entry!)

Leave another comment letting me know what historical figure you’d call if it were possible (I’m pretty sure that they’re working on that app, so you may as well be ready!) (One entry!)

Tweet a link to this contest with a #timetocall hashtag and then leave a comment with a link to your tweet. (One entry!)

Winner will be chosen at random! On August 30th! Which is when this giveaway ends!

And if that wasn’t enough excitement, there are actually other bloggers running their own Vonage Time to Call contests! You can find out who they are www.callsfromsmartphone.com, so be sure to check them out and increase your chances of winning an iPad2 via their contests. I won’t be offended. Really. It’s okay if you see other blogs.

Thanks for reading and good luck!

Fineprint: If you win a prize in one of the websites’ contests, then you can’t win again in the whole competition. Depending on where the winner lives they may receive the Apple iPad 2 32 GB WiFi, or the equivalent Apple Gift Card to use at an Apple retailer. Also if you win, you’ll have to work out a visitation schedule with the iPad2 with me. I want weekends. And days ending with a “y”. Oh. I’m not allowed to say that. Okay, just kidding. If you win, it’s yours. But you’re not allowed to tease me that you have an iPad2 and I have whatever the opposite of that is.

What a great contest! I would only call you, Darling Marinka, from whatever country I decide to travel to next. Just me and my iPad, roaming the globe, calling Marinka at all hours of the day and night.

Don’t hold that last part against me and leave my name out of the drawing. Please.

I had to think long and hard (two minutes is a long time, right?) on the second entry question: What historical figure I’d call if it were possible. I’ve settled on Alexander Graham Bell. Both to thank him for creating telephones in the first place, and to tell him that his first phrase spoken by phone was kind of lame and that’s what people will be repeating for centuries about him.

As for my historical figure, I don’t think I’d want to call anyone because then I’d have to explain what an iPad is and I would probably make some sort of dumb embarrassing joke. Or I’d call Jimmy Hoffa and ask him where he is.

Ring-a-ling.
“Hello, mother”, I say every Saturday morning. I say it in Bulgarian. I kind of yell because my Mom is slightly deaf and Manhattan is a long way from the tiny village where she lives. My mother responds. She’s also yelling because she’s just very much into yelling. Mother fills me in on the latest news in Manhattan. She gets the scoop on National Bulgarian Television. We are having a splendid time. It costs me fortunes and it warms my heart.

First, I absolutely refuse to see other blogs.

Second, if Canada counts as abroad and/or a different country, then I would call my uncle in Canada and for the cheap price of $1.99, I would ask him why is it that he always tortured me with math questions when I was little. It’s not a party trick to recite the multiplication tables, okay? Normally, I wouldn’t waste precious minutes on that kind of call.

As an artist with the attention span of a gnat, I have always been mesmerized by the works of Vincent Van Gogh. The intricate brush work, the bold, swirling colors, that poor bloody ear stump. Even as a child, I always felt bad that he would never come to know of his posthumous fame. You can’t go into a Gordman’s or Michael’s today without seeing ‘Starry Night’. I’m sure if they took a poll, it would be voted as America’s favorite painting (well, maybe after the dogs playing poker).

If I could call a historical figure, I would call up ol’ Vincent and congratulate him on being so prolifically awesome. I mean sure, he might go a little more bonkers if he received a call from the FUTURE, but that’s a risk I’m willing to take for an iPad2. He still has one good ear to use a phone, right? I think I could make this guy really happy, and if I can assume this hypothetical game involves being able to transfer money to him through time, then that would make me the Mother Teresa of happy phone calls!

I’ve only met him once so I’m not sure he’ll take my call, but I’m calling Archbishop Desmond Tutu to talk about compassion, resiliance, strength, and forgiveness. My younger son is named for him, in part because I believe in the importance of the Truth and Reconciliation Councils, but I am just not that forgiving. I’d like to understand more about believing in the goodness of the world.

Historical figure? Harriet Tubman, please ~ courageous, fiercely determined, defiant, death-defying. Soul-deep passion for seizing freedom for herself and others. Oh, the stories she would tell!

I know, I know…

Here’s to modern day miracles, it could happen: I could win.

If I were to call someone abroad, it would be my new friend Renee in Australia. We met on a Contiki trip in Europe, last September. Apparently 2 weeks together traveling really can make for lifelong friends. I would tell her I’m sorry that I haven’t mailed the graham crackers she requested to make smores (they’ve been sitting on my staircase for a month, I have no excuse for not mailing them other than laziness). Not only does Australia not have graham crackers, they don’t know what smores are. It was my duty as an American citizen to teach as many people as possible the joy and art of making smores.

Our kids are good friends, too, and Ethan would want to talk to her 9 y.o. about all things Japanimation while Jake is besties w/ her 4 y.o. and talks about his stuffed animals as if they were real people, so he’d want to fill her in on what they’ve been doing this month (going to camp!)

Historical figures you say? Dead ones, you say? Hmmmm, so many to choose from… but I need to find one who did NOT die a gruesome death — because that would probably make them all cranky and disagreeable and not a scintillating conversationalist, no?

OK, how’s this… Albert Einstein. I figure with my finely tuned ASD-dar I could figure out if he REALLY had Aspergers or was just too brilliant to bother making small talk and being polite to people.

Also I could find out if he’s pissed off & insulted that Albert Brooks changed his name from being his namesake.

I’d call my sister-in-law in Greece. You see, there’s a family feud going down about a fence. A very important fence that needs to be built around an 8×8 room so that we can claim rights to said “house”. “House”? Yeah, it’s 4 walls and a roof, no plumbing and no kitchen but we MUST BUILD THE HOUSE and claim our stake in this village that we never visit. So we can have goats and make feta and clean everything with windex because they are greeks. And everything is better with windex and feta. So this is who I’d call … the fence people and my sister-in-law. And I’d say, “SEND ME FETA!” (so much better if screamed in old country greek accent).

Historical Figure… um, Walt Disney. Who wouldn’t want to talk to the man who dreamed up the “happiest place on earth”?

Careful what you ask for!

I would call the Secretary General of the United Nations. Most interesting nobody has wanted to know what I would say, if I told you everything the Secret service would be knocking at your door. But it would definately include the following: In the 20 years since I filed my complaint in 1988 against the US Government, at the UN in Geneva, all the problems that the UN itself in committee meetings said this use of satellite technology would perpetuate have come to fruition. How can an organization that predicted the massive invasive use of personal information watch this happen and remain silent. As I listened to a satellite recording a girl being buried alive in central Florida, yes I’ve been sensitive to certain level of radio waves since I was a child, I heard your death. The death of an organization that has inspired unthinkable horror and violence, while the next first whore climbs into bed in the White House keeping silent, more children will die in horror while these eavesdropping satellites just watch!

That my warm up, needs some editing but it gets hotter after that.

I would call President Clinton and urge him to kill the Taliban leaders when he had the chance. Or at least take them into some sort of custody, Guantanamo type thing.

Let me think…. I would call a friend of mine that lives in rural France. She recently was in a car accident and is feeling low.
