Experiment

by Marinka on March 2, 2013

Last week I conducted an experiment because I am a woman of science.

See, I noticed that every weekend I was doing the laundry, and because I don’t believe in the whole “suffering in silence” I was tweeting my pain.

The historical highs:

And the personal lows:

And strategy:

And let’s not forget tips:

laundry-3

There was even some suspense!

Despite this obviously rich history together, I got sick of laundry. I got sick of doing it every weekend, like some kind of weekly clockwork. So last weekend I rebelled.

Last weekend I decided that I wasn’t going to do the laundry. That I was going to have two laundry-free days. And I was going to enjoy them and live with the consequences. How bad could they be, I thought. Maybe someone else will do the laundry! Maybe there will be a miracle and the laundry will do itself! Maybe we have enough clothes not to do laundry every weekend! Maybe this was the beginning of my liberation!

At first my experiment went pretty well. No one said anything the whole weekend (also, I wasn’t listening.)

But then on Monday night, as I settled in for a relaxing viewing of The Bachelor, I heard complaints that included words “no clean clothes” and “tomorrow”. And that’s how I ended up doing laundry on Monday night. Which I enjoyed even less than doing laundry on the weekend.

So the experiment was successful. I now know that I will always do laundry on the weekend.

The end.

Our washer died, so I had to spend my Friday night at the washateria. If I had been drunk, it would have been just like college.

I expect your findings to be written up on a tri fold poster board pronto. My daughter’s science project has nothing on this.

Make the kids do their own laundry. It’s very liberating. Also, it gets them out of the house while you are trying to watch The Bachelor.

To this, I can only say:

MORE EXPERIMENTS, PLEASE.

I too hate laundry. Doing it. Putting it away.
No woman spends her childhood dreaming of doing laundry when she grows up.
I put up a sign that said
” put away your laundry or ill punch you in the face. Love Mom”.
I think the sentiment shines through.

one wonders if one’s children are tall enough to reach the washing machine, or if one could hide the sauvignon blanc bottle in, say, an empty detergent box, and turn that laundry time into “me time.” One might also think that throwing away unmatched socks is a stroke of pure fucking genius.

The hubs has taken over family laundry, but that’s just because we ended up homeless end of 2012, I required a 2 week psych hospital stint, had to ping-pong here and there after hospitalization and finally, our family came together again last month to live in this rental where my husband would rather I not have to go into laundry area – it was so disgusting back there before he cleaned it up, and he still feels so bad about it, he rather just do the laundry. Pretty great, right? Riiiight?

In order to be scientifically valid your experiment needs to be repeated under the same conditions and under slightly different conditions. That way you can determine factors, influences and make a niffy pie-chart about it all.

Your kids can do their own laundry. Add it to their chore list.

There area solutions!
Husbandrinka, also working, can do his own laundry! Buy kids new underwear, may be time anyway. Then, you can call a very lovely woman, who helps us every other week. For a reasonable fee, she cleans your apt AND will do laundry. I of course do my own…

I also hate laundy, specially on weekends, so my my experiment was to see how long I can go without doing it, and it somehow backfired in me not having anything else to wear. Nothing that a little shopping would not resolve of course.
