Low Battery Noise (and a Giveaway!)

by Marinka on June 5, 2010

One of the things that my husband and I fight about constantly and consistently is how I charge my cell phone and how he doesn’t charge his.
I like to keep my cell phone battery fully charged because I envision myself to be a first-responder type person. Especially if it involves a friend calling me about a sample sale. I want to be able to respond promptly. I cannot afford to have my battery drained. People are counting on me. Oh yeah, and the kids’ school may call or something.

Husbandrinka, on the other hand, has a more complicated system that he obnoxiously refers to “battery maintenance.” It is not as important for him to be reached on his cell phone, you see, what is crucial is that his cell phone battery is healthy. So he lets the battery drain, for health reasons.

I have no idea what he’s talking about; all I know that the low battery sound that his phone makes is FUCKING ANNOYING and I’m pretty sure that there were quite a few Snapped wives who were acquitted when in dramatic testimony it was revealed that they were forced to listen to the Low Battery Noise on their husbands’ cell phones. In case I’m being too subtle here, the Low Battery Noise makes me insane. And as a result, we have conversations like this:

Marinka: Can you turn off your cell phone? That beeping noise is making me insane.
Husbandrinka: Making?
Marinka: It’s so annoying. Just turn it off.
Husbandrinka: It’s not a big deal. I’ll charge it soon.
Marinka: CHARGE IT NOW OR TURN IT OFF! DEAR GOD! I CAN’T TAKE MUCH MORE OF THIS. BEEP….BEEP….BEEP!
Husbandrinka: Ok, I’ll get to it soon.
Marinka: I CAN’T TAKE ANOTHER MINUTE. IT’S LIKE THE CHINESE WATER TORTURE OR SOMETHING.
Husbandrinka: Hang on, I’ll get to it soon (opening War and Peace)
Marinka: You don’t deserve a cell phone.

* * *

Inevitably, when I’m on the floor and foaming at the mouth, and the vet examines me and pronounces me to be in a highly agitated state, Husbandrinka will not be able to resist and he will tell me that “it’s only proper to let a battery drain completely and not have it fully charged like some people.”
And then I become completely unhinged and tell him that at least people can reach me on my cell phone, whereas with him, it’s a huge gamble, because at any given moment his battery may be out of power completely, he will tell me that he’s had the same battery for the past three years, thereby winning some kind of cell phone battery longevity award, whereas my cell phone battery had to be replaced twice in the past year. Apparently he thinks he’s going to shame me into being some kind of cell phone battery irresponsible murderer. Just as apparently, he’s never met me before.

Because in these uncertain times, a well charged phone is my weapon of choice. So you can imagine a yelp of happiness that I let out when I was presented with my very own iGo Charger. Look, I don’t usually plug things on my blog, but this has been a game changer, where game equals life for me.

This iGo Charger works like this: You plug your phone in, and the charger charges the phone. BUT WHILE IT IS CHARGING THE PHONE, IT IS ALSO CHARGING ITSELF. I KNOW!

So, then, you’re going on about your day, and you notice that your battery is low? You can charge it inside your purse. Without an outlet.
And while you’re charging your phone, you are also saving the environment and are basically thisclose to snatching the Nobel Peace Prize for Al Gore.
This means that your cell phone is never out of power, and more importantly, your loved ones are never exposed to that annoying Low Battery Noise!

It’s like a miracle.

A miracle that you like, not one of those “locust!” miracles.

And a lifesaver too. Because for the past few weeks I’ve been on jury duty and I could actually charge the phone in my purse. How cool is that? One woman actually asked me if I had an outlet in my purse and I looked all mysterious and said “maybe”. Her eyes glistened with respect and admiration.

Husbandrinka, of course, is not allowed to touch it, until he admits the superiority of a constantly charged battery and apologizes for his foolishness.
But you don’t have to be like Husbandrinka, deluded and sad.

You can win your very own iGo Charge Anywhere (and tip!).
Just leave a comment about who you think is right–me or Husbandrinka. For extra entries, tweet this giveaway (and then leave a comment with the link to your tweet). For super-extra entries, fix the Gulf Coast oil leak.

Good luck! I’ll pick a random winner at some point during the week of June 14th.

You’re right, of course. The beep is totally obnoxious and allowing your cellphone to dwindle down to no charge when there are outlets everywhere is just lame when you have important people who need to talk to you like your wife.

I have yet to read of a situation in which Husbandrinka was right and you were wrong. It’s just unheard of. Unthinkable, even.

My own husband lets his phone die a slow death also and as I peacefully slumber, a voice will emerge from the still of the night: “The battery is crit-i-call-ally low.” The pronunciation may be even more annoying than the fact that it awakens me as frequently as a newborn.

It may all be a thinly veiled ruse on their part. How easy is it to say, “Sorry. I didn’t get your call. My phone was dead.” Hmmmmmmm.

That’s not true anymore now that phones have lithium batteries that can be charged anytime. Although if he has had it three years then maybe he does have an older one that lasts longer when you let it drain and in that case he may be right but there is never an excuse for incessant beeping ! Igo charger looks awesome!

Reply

Becky June 5, 2010 at 11:50 pm

My (techie) husband says that batteries these days are made so you do not need to drain them periodically like you used to. So Husbandrinka is wrong, unless he’s got one of those old cell phones that are as big as your head.
Even if he wasn’t wrong technically he would still be wrong, though. Duh.

Reply

Jen June 6, 2010 at 12:20 am

You’re right. I keep my phone charged by plugging it in whenever I’m in the car. This drives my husband crazy because he says this drains the car battery (?) but why would they make care chargers if that was true?

Reply

Sophie June 6, 2010 at 1:30 am

For a second there I thought you were giving away husbandrinka’s practically dead phone. I’m glad to hear you’re not, ‘coz dead phone SUCK! And the beeping can drive the stronges women into complete breakdowns. You have been, of course, very brave about it, what with your SUPERIORLY BETTER fully charged battery. 🙂

Reply

SubWife June 6, 2010 at 1:31 am

Of course you are right! The point of having a cell phone is to have a reliable and consistent way to call or be reached in case of emergency (sample sale qualifies as emergency, obviously). What good is healthy battery if it’s dead and someone in the middle of a crisis is unsuccessfully trying to reach you?? Seriously, Husbandrinka, charge your cell phone!

Well, you know I usually enjoy siding with Husbandrinka because he’s a man and he’s Italian, but I have to go with you on this one. The thing is, I think his mind is stuck in the 1990’s science of battery recharge. I’m fairly certain the batteries of the last 10 year do not work the same way – i.e. needing to be drained for longer life. As long as you don’t keep your phone plugged in to the point where it gets overheated, your battery life should be the same whether it’s “drained” or not. The bad news is that I think he’s lying about having the same battery for three years. and if he’s lying about that, then who knows what else he’s lying about, (i.e. “business” trips, secret wives, not reading your blog)? Just saying…

Welcome Husbandrinka to this century, as I’ve believe the new fangled batteries do not need to be charged. First of all, it’s not even a question: you are obviously right. Second of all, I drive my own husband crazy, not with the beeping of a low battery, but with the generally forgetting to plug it in to charge, so that it invariably has a dead battery just at the moment when I need it most — like when we are trying to figure out which one of us will pick up which kid from their two different school/daycare establishments. “Okay, so I’ll get h..” *dead silence* her? him? who will you get? who knows? He would love you forever if I could charge the thing in my purse. Forever. And not in any creepy ways, either, because he’s so NOT creepy like that.

I should totally win now because I am giving scientific proof that you are right! From: http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to-cell-phone-battery-last-longer-075548/
#DO NOT fully discharge a lithium-ion battery! Unlike Ni-Cd batteries, lithium-ion batteries’ life is shortened every time you fully discharge them. Instead, charge them when the battery meter shows one bar left. Lithium-ion batteries, like most rechargeable batteries have a set amount of chargers in them. – – Most newer cell phones have lithium-ion batteries, while older ones generally have nickel-based batteries
– #*Nickel-based batteries (either NiCd or NiMH) DO NOT generally suffer from a misunderstood phenomenon known as the “memory effect.” As described in Wikipedia and many expert sources, the term “memory effect” has been widely mythologized to describe any and all deterioration of NiCD batteries , in many cases misleading consumers into further shortening the lives of the batteries through over-discharging to “recondition” them. –

We have cellphone charging arguments here too. My husband charges his obsessively and then leaves it where he can’t hear it anyway. I’m the one who always forgets to charge mine…

Actually I used to work for a cell phone company and Husbandrinka is *technically* correct.

HOWEVER!

I myself have had to replace my cell phone battery three times in the past year, and you know what, I only have the cell phone, no landline, and I have three children with special needs, a husband with more than one donor organ, an eighty-six-year-old father in ill health halfway around the world, and the “low battery” sound makes me want to kill.

Replacing Husbandrinka’s battery twice a year would cost less than the amount of therapy (be it talk or retail) and nerve medication (be it xanax or Haagen-Dazs) this is probably causing you to need. So while his way is Kinder To The Electronic Device and carries the benefit of a smaller carbon footprint, your way is more conducive to being available to the people who need to reach you and not getting burned in your bed while you sleep.

I think it would be made of win if you bought him a replacement battery, and then told him that your friend from inside the computer used to work in the wireless industry and if he lets the new battery sit for more than a month or two it will never carry a full charge and you will have wasted your money (except that you bought it on sale and can’t return it). I’m Ashkenazic; I know how this game goes.

And I WANT that charger!

The batteries—unless his phone is from the 1980’s are no longer made of the materials that require the “drain—–>then charge” technique.

This is all for not.

Ya’ll can charge any ‘ol time—all the live long day. Does not have any impact what-so-ever on the health (omg) on your battery.

Unless…as I mentioned…his phone is of the stone ages—in which case—THAT would be causing me a slow and violent death.

I read a manual to my cell phone about draining the battery down completely. You are supposed to do it first two times. It made sense and I did that. (I can’t speak about “longevity” since my cycle of losing phones is so much shorter than battery life. ) But making it a routine.. I know I’ll be simply bored to wait and wait until it’s charged completely so the whole procedure wouldn’t be worth effort. The gadget is so awesome! Again I was without my phone so often sometimes I simply forget to charge it at night.

You both are right but if that beeping drives your SO crazy I’d give up the habit. Maybe he could change the sound settings?

You are completely right. If I were a smarter person, I’d be able to explain it in detail, but all I know is that there is a difference between batteries, and the old kind were like your husband says–they had to be drained completely and then charged from 0 to be effective. New ones aren’t like that. I don’t know what you do to batteries to make them die twice in a year, but it’s not that!

Either way, that is the advice we used to give out to people. That is also when cell phones resembled those carried by Zach Morris. Technology has changed and you no longer have to fully drain the phone.

But for reals, I have convinced myself that I NEED this charger. I’m a technology whore and, to some, just a whore- either way, I love new stuff like this. And I, like you, am OBSESSED with keeping my phone charged. It is a constant balancing act of prioritizing feeding my infant…or going upstairs to charge my phone. Ooooh, I absolutely abhor that awful low battery beep. My ever-so-considerate hubs is adamant that he *must* let his phone completely die before he can charge it. And he *must* leave said phone sitting in the living room while it’s going through its death throes. With the volume on maximum. At 10:30 at night. When the little people of the house (and moi) are desperately trying to sleep. GAAAAAH!

Yeah, his theory on killing the battery would be much more tolerable if he would at least agree to turn the *&@!!* thing to vibrate while it’s dying. His reasoning for leaving it at full blast?

Hubs: It kills the batter faster and better if the volume’s turned all the way up instead of on vibrate. . . doesn’t it?

Moi: No, but it *could* get *you* killed faster.

I’m sure in some state somewhere, killing a spouse because they torture you with the infernal beeping is justifiable homicide.

HAHAHA. I want to know the logic behind this: the phone has to struggle harder to make a louder noise. Also that it takes more energy to go *beep* than to shake itself.
You are a very patient woman if you let this go on more than once. LOL. Also, the state you are looking for is probably Texas. 😉
