Nice Insult

by Marinka on March 17, 2011

My 12 year old daughter was modeling a new outfit for me.

I thought she was stunning and told her so.

“If stunning means ugly,” my 9 year old son said.

While I was trying to think of something appropriate to scream at him that would convey the importance of respecting women, getting along with his sister, not focusing on physical beauty and doing well in school (thrown in for good measure) my daughter retorted, “Whatever, I’m about 50 times more beautiful than your wife will ever be, and she’s going to be gorgeous.”

He was speechless.

For once.

I feel bad stealing lines from a 12-year old, but come on. I could never come up with one better than that.

Hot damn! Did she come up with that off the top of her head? I’m sure she did. I’ll bet she slings it hot and fast like a short-order insult cook.

Beautiful. And she’s only 12… Sounds like your son has a few more years of education in the art of sweet smackdowns ahead of him.

I am very impressed. But she was very expressive even when her vocabulary was may be 50-60 words.

The ability to express yourself is a separate talent.

The opposite is French ” witty on the stairs” implying a good answer when the conversation is over for a good while.

It’s probably obvious, but one of the things that I loved most about what she said was that even though she was insulting him, she was still kind. Acknowledging that his wife was going to be gorgeous. But still coming out on top.

That’s part of what’s so awesome about the whole thing. And that she didn’t even skip a beat 🙂

I adore Ladrinka, but today she’s my fave of your kids.

It’s just like I tell my kids “of course I have a favorite child! It just changes daily, based on who’s doing what” 😉

This story is one of the gazillion reasons I wish I had even one daughter, instead of two sons. Although actually when I was pregnant with boy #2, I realized that maybe it was good I was having another boy, bc I felt like it would be really, really hard for me to resist favoring the daughter over son #1. Because boys don’t insult each other with rapier wit and barbed compassion. They just hit each other. BO-RING.

Fabulous. If only we could bottle that wit and self-assuredness and give it to every adolescent girl. The world would be a better place–or at least middle schools would.
