Twitter for the Holidays

by Marinka on December 4, 2009

The holidays are around the corner and you know what that means. That’s right. Getting gifts for everyone on your list. And if you’re like most people, no matter how hard you tried alienating some people on your list, they’re still hanging around.

So, you’re faced with the dilemma. You want to get these people something, but since you didn’t receive any bailout money, you don’t want to spend a lot.

This is where Motherhood in NYC’s exclusive Twitter Gift List comes in handy.

Because everyone, no matter how much of a dinosaur, wants to appear hip and modern and nothing is more modern than Twitter. It’s word of the year, people. And who doesn’t love celebrities? Why not combine the two, add a sprinkling of “it’s the thought that counts,” plus a helping of “it’s better to give than receive” and voila! You have a recipe for absolutely free, yet super thoughtful gift giving.

By giving your loved one a special-hand selected celebrity to follow, you’ll save a mint (assuming that a mint is what you are used to spending on your giftees) and impress them by being on the cutting edge. Sure, they may never actually log on to Twitter to follow your suggested celebrity, but do you really think that they’ve ever worn that holiday sweater you forced on them a few years ago?

So, please allow me to present the 2009 Celebrity Twitter Follows for Everyone on Your Gift List.

For your “That Obama is no good” in-laws : @RealScottBaio with tweets like this,
scottbaio

For your “it’s raining again, just like the weather man promised” neighbor: @SamChampion! Sam is a friendly tweeter and is learning to spell words like s-n-o-w.

A gift of song: @johncmayer…..I need to learn how to start saying no. Like when someone says “please stop choking me.”

Marinka, I’m deeply disappointed by the outright laziness that you displayed in your post today. Deeply. I may not recover. I began reading with delight, and as I saw the Twitter screenshots for the first few suggestions, I wiggled a little with joy and settled in for some fun.

And then you just listed. No more screenshots for my snarky soul to mock.

I mean, honestly. There’s a certain level of expectation we devoted followers have. Don’t let us down!

(I still love you, though.)

You know, I’ve been carrying on about my laziness for months on this blog now. Obviously, you’ve been skimming. Please re-read all my posts. Thank you.

Well, OBVIOUSLY I was being quite sarcastic and facetious about my previous comment because I KNOW you’re lazy. It’s one of the things I love about you. It makes me feel better about myself.

I don’t think you’re lazy. I was actually going to say that I think this may be my new favorite post. I identify with those in-laws that may want to start following Scott B.

i heard on npr that the kids (i.e. under 25) aren’t really into the twitter. they think it’s for old folks trying to be “hip and modern.”

I disagree. I’m 23 and I pretty much live on Twitter. However, I also heard this story on NPR. While I was sitting at home on a Friday night. Knitting a sweater to keep the bones warm. And watching one of those PBS shows like Upstairs, Downstairs that they stage in England and has like 10 episodes and you can get on VHS at a public library.

I ranted on Twitter when the celebs moved in, had my priviledges suspended, and only have every other weekend visitations now. Guess Demi and Ashton are sensitive about their esteem issues…

I have yet to figure out how to twitter…much less add it to my phone?!?! Sigh! 🙁

I can’t believe @kathyireland didn’t make it for the bulimic-need-good-gagging-material friend on your list. Or, the one who needs blogging inspiration- that post of yours make me laugh just thinking about it.

Chachi Hates Obama.

Call NBC. Let’s do it.

Oh so totally creative. Lovin’ it. Had no idea about Chachi… fascinating. (And I have to admit I laughed!)

What a brilliant idea! Not to mention — following YOU! You could get a bunch of new twits (is that the name for those who follow folks on Twitter?) out of this!
